WARNING!  Stephen Winkelman from Wichita, Kansas

 

Have you lost money with financial advisor Stephen Winkelman of Wichita, Kansas?  We are continuing our investigation into allegations made the Kansas Securities Commission, against Stephen E. Winkelman, Jr.  The Kansas Securities Commission revoked Winkelman’s securities license after he failed to respond to an investigation.

 

Kansas was investigating Stephen Winkelman regarding allegations that he sent consolidated reports to an elderly (and now deceased) customer with inflated values.  One report showed that the customer had cash equivalents of $32,856 and stocks and bonds valued at $268,560; in actuality, Winkelman overstated the cash value by $30,843, and the stocks and bonds values by $266,858 (for a total of over $297,000).

 

Stephen Winkelman was a financial advisor and registered representative of Independent Financial Group, Inc. from January 2013 to May 2014 and with Centaurus Financial from September 2006 to December 2012.  He worked at a branch office in Wichita, Kansas.  Winkelman has been the subject of at least one customer complaint, and he also was banned by FINRA (the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority) for this conduct.  He was also terminated by both Independent Financial Group for using an unauthorized email address to communicate with customers.

 

Brokerage firms like Independent Financial Group and Centaurus Financial have a responsibility to adequately supervise all representatives who are registered through their firm.  Brokerage firms also must take steps to ensure that their financial advisors follow all securities rules and regulations, as well as internal firm policies.  When brokerage firms fail to adequately supervise their registered representatives, they may be liable for investment losses sustained by customers.
