James Cox from Baton Rouge, Louisiana Suspended by FINRAFor Variable Annuity Recommendations

Have you lost money with financial advisor James Cox from Baton Rouge, Louisiana?  We are currently investigating allegations made by FINRA (the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority) made against James Keith Cox.  FINRA alleged that during 2014, James Cox made unsuitable recommendations to his customer to sell variable annuities in order to switch others.

FINRA alleged that Cox had no reasonable basis to make these recommendations, and that he earned $25,460 in commissions for making these recommendations.  To settle these allegations, Cox agreed to pay a $10,000 fine and agreed to be suspended from the securities industry for four months.

James Cox was a registered representative and financial advisor with Sterne Agee & Leach from March 2009 to July 2015.  He was then affiliated with Stifel Nicolaus and Company (from July 2015 to April 2017), which acquired Sterne Agee & Leach.  He worked out of branch offices in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  He has been the subject of at least four customer disputes, and was terminated by Stifel Nicolaus and Company in April 2017.

Broker-dealers like Sterne Agee & Leach have a responsibility to adequately supervise all representatives who are registered through their firm, including investments sold by their registered representatives.  Broker-dealers also must take steps to ensure that their financial advisors follow all securities rules and regulations, such as to refrain from switching variable annuities.  When broker-dealers fail to adequately supervise their registered representatives, they may be liable for investment losses sustained by customers.

Our firm represents investors throughout the country who are victims of financial advisors’ negligence and fraud.  Our firm has offices in Denver and the Seattle-area, but we continue to represent investors throughout the U.S., including Louisiana and the New Orleans area, and we previously have represented investors against Stifel Nicolaus.
