Christopher Burtraw, formerly with J.P. Turner & Company, Barred by SEC

Have you lost money with financial advisor Christopher Burtraw of Lakewood, Colorado?  We are continuing our investigation into allegations made by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).  The SEC alleged that Burtraw was convicted of criminal theft in January 2018 in Jefferson County, Colorado.  Burtraw was alleged to have unlawfully obtained money between March 2015 and August 2015, while he was affiliated with J.P. Turner.

FINRA, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, previously brought a regulatory action against Christopher Burtraw. FINRA also barred Burtraw from the securities industry after he failed to respond to a FINRA investigation.  FINRA was investigating Burtraw regarding allegations that he “borrowed” money from multiple customers of his brokerage firm, J.P. Turner, in violation of FINRA rules.

Christopher Burtraw was a financial advisor and registered representative of J.P. Turner & Company from November 2014 to October 2015.  He also was with Purshe Kaplan Sterling Investments from November 2009 to November 2014.  He worked at a branch office in Lakewood, Colorado.

Brokerage firms like J.P. Turner & Company have a responsibility to adequately supervise all representatives who are registered through their firm.  Brokerage firms also must take steps to ensure that their financial advisors follow all securities rules and regulations, as well as internal firm policies.  When brokerage firms fail to adequately supervise their registered representatives, they may be liable for investment losses sustained by customers.
